Using an eSIM in Hong Kong

Open internet, unlike mainland China
This is the key thing to know. Hong Kong is not subject to mainland China's internet filtering in the same way, so services such as Google, WhatsApp and Instagram are generally accessible over mobile data without needing a VPN for that reason. A Hong Kong-only plan does not include mainland China, so if your trip crosses the border to Shenzhen or beyond, check whether your selected plan includes China or arrange separate coverage for that leg. Some Hong Kong plans include Macau and some do not, so check the plan details if the ferry to Macau is on your itinerary.
Coverage across the city
Hong Kong is compact and has extensive mobile coverage across the main urban areas, including much of the MTR system and the main transport routes. Coverage can vary on ferries, hiking trails and in quieter parts of the outer islands, so download offline maps as a precaution.
How much data
