Saudi eSIM or Airport SIM Card: Which Is Better for Umrah?

In this article
Quick answer: you can buy a visitor SIM card from STC, Mobily or Zain at Saudi airports, and they are good value if you want a Saudi phone number and a large allowance. You will need your passport and may need biometric verification, and queues can be long in Umrah and Hajj season. A travel eSIM bought before you fly skips the counter and is working when you land, but it is usually data only.

Buying a SIM at a Saudi airport
STC, Mobily and Zain all sell visitor packages, and you will find their counters in the arrivals halls of the main airports, including Jeddah and Madinah. Staff are used to pilgrims and the process is routine.
What to expect:
- Documents: your passport, and often your visa details.
- Biometrics: Saudi Arabia registers mobile lines to a named person, and a the operator may require biometric verification as part of registration.
- Queues: short outside the busy seasons. During Ramadan, school holidays and Hajj, several flights of pilgrims can arrive together and the wait grows.
- Packages and prices: these change often and differ between networks, so compare what is on the board when you arrive.
If you arrive tired after a long flight with a group and a coach waiting, the queue is the real cost.
Using a travel eSIM
You buy the plan online, receive a QR code by email and install it over Wi-Fi at home. When you land you switch the line on and you can connect for Nusuk, transport and messages after the eSIM registers on a supported network.
The trade-offs are worth knowing:
- Data only: most travel eSIMs have no Saudi number, so you cannot make or receive normal local calls on them. Messaging apps work over data.
- Price per gigabyte: for very large allowances, a local visitor package can be cheaper.
- Compatibility: your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked. Check it with our compatibility checker.
Which should you choose?
A travel eSIM suits you if you are on a typical Umrah trip of one to two weeks, you mainly need data for maps, Nusuk and messaging, and you want to avoid buying a SIM at the airport.
A local SIM suits you if you are staying a month or more, you need a Saudi number for local calls, or your phone does not support eSIM.
Some pilgrims use both: an eSIM for the first days so nothing depends on the airport counter, then a local SIM later if they find they need a Saudi number.
What about roaming on your UK number?
Your UK SIM will usually work in Saudi Arabia, but what it costs depends on your home network and plan, and it can be expensive outside Europe. Check your network's current Saudi Arabia rates before you rely on it. Whichever option you choose, you can keep your UK number active for calls and bank codes and switch its data roaming off.
Common questions
Do I need to give my fingerprint for an eSIM?
Buying a SIM or eSIM directly from a Saudi network involves identity verification, which may require visiting a counter. A travel eSIM bought online before you travel is set up differently. Any registration requirement for an Astaroam plan is shown in the plan details.
Can I buy a Saudi SIM before I leave the UK?
Local visitor SIMs are sold and registered in Saudi Arabia. If you want everything sorted before you fly, a travel eSIM is the practical route.
Will a travel eSIM work with the Nusuk app?
Yes. Nusuk needs an internet connection, and a travel eSIM provides mobile data like any other line.
Can I keep WhatsApp on my UK number?
Yes. WhatsApp stays linked to your UK number whichever SIM provides the data.
