iPhone Duo: No SIM Card Slot? How to Use an eSIM When Travelling

iPhone Duo: No SIM Card Slot? How to Use an eSIM When Travelling

Quick answer: The iPhone Duo does not have a physical SIM card tray. It uses eSIM instead, so you cannot insert a traditional SIM card from your current phone or buy a physical SIM at the airport and put it in. You can use a mobile provider's eSIM for your regular phone service and add a separate data-only travel eSIM when travelling. The iPhone Duo supports two active eSIMs at once.

Does the iPhone Duo have a SIM card slot?

No. Apple specifies that the iPhone Duo is eSIM-only. It supports two active eSIMs and can store eight or more eSIM profiles. That means you can keep a regular mobile plan and a separate travel data plan on the same phone, provided your providers support eSIM and the device is unlocked for the networks you want to use.

Apple announced the iPhone Duo in September 2026, with pre-orders starting 16 October and availability beginning 23 October in its initial launch markets. Check Apple's product page for availability in your country.

Moving your existing mobile number to an iPhone Duo

If you currently use a physical SIM

Your physical SIM cannot be inserted into the Duo. Contact your current mobile provider to convert your existing number to an eSIM, or follow the transfer option offered during iPhone setup if your provider supports it. You are moving your existing mobile service, not buying a new phone number. Complete the move before disposing of your old phone.

If you already use an eSIM

During setup, look for the option to transfer your mobile plan from your previous phone. Apple's eSIM Quick Transfer is available only with participating mobile providers; otherwise, your provider can arrange the move using its own activation process. An eSIM installed on one phone is not automatically reusable on another.

If you are switching from Android

Ask your mobile provider about moving your number to the iPhone Duo. Some providers and devices support direct transfer during setup; others require a new eSIM activation.

Before you erase or trade in your old phone

  1. Check that your regular mobile plan is working on the Duo by making a call and sending a text.
  2. Confirm that you can access any banking or authentication apps you need.
  3. Check that the Duo is unlocked before adding an eSIM from a different provider: go to Settings > General > About and look for No SIM restrictions under Carrier Lock or Network Provider Lock.
  4. Only erase the old phone once your essential services are working on the new one.

Using the iPhone Duo when travelling abroad

Because there is no SIM tray, a physical airport SIM card is not an option. You have three ways to get connected:

Option What it means
Use your existing mobile plan abroad Keep using your regular provider's roaming service. Check its international data charges before travelling.
Buy a local eSIM Purchase an eSIM from a mobile provider at your destination, where available. Some destinations require identity verification.
Buy a travel eSIM Purchase a prepaid data plan online and install it using the instructions supplied by the travel eSIM provider.

Can you keep your existing mobile plan active?

Yes, if you want to. The Duo supports two active eSIMs. You can leave your existing mobile plan enabled for its normal calls and texts while selecting a separate travel eSIM for mobile data. Alternatively, you can turn your regular line off while travelling. A data-only Astaroam eSIM does not provide a new phone number or traditional calls and SMS. If you leave your regular line active abroad, your mobile provider's roaming charges can still apply to calls, texts or other usage.

To choose which line supplies internet access, open Settings > Mobile Service (or Cellular) > Mobile Data (or Cellular Data) and select your travel eSIM. Check the roaming instructions supplied with your travel plan and disable data switching to your regular line if you do not want it used for roaming data.

Using an Astaroam travel eSIM on the iPhone Duo

Astaroam offers prepaid, data-only travel eSIMs for destinations around the world. The iPhone Duo supports eSIM technology, so you can add an Astaroam travel plan to an unlocked device using the installation instructions provided after purchase.

  • Choose your destination and data plan. Browse Astaroam travel eSIMs before you depart.
  • Receive your eSIM by email. Follow the QR-code or supported on-device installation method in your instructions while you have a reliable internet connection.
  • Follow your plan's activation instructions. Installation and validity timing depend on the package, so check the instructions rather than assuming every plan starts when you land.
  • Use your travel eSIM for mobile data. You can keep your existing mobile plan active separately if you need it.
  • Share your connection. Personal Hotspot is supported on Astaroam plans, subject to available data and device settings.

For example, if you're visiting Turkey, arrange and install your eSIM before travelling because access to some international eSIM services is restricted there. For Saudi Arabia, arranging your data in advance means you do not need to visit an airport counter to buy a physical SIM.

Already have an Astaroam eSIM installed on your old phone?

Do not delete it expecting to transfer it. An Astaroam eSIM already installed on one device cannot be transferred to another. If it still has usable data, keep it on the old phone until you finish using it. Where supported, you can share the old phone's connection with your Duo through Personal Hotspot. For the Duo itself, purchase a new compatible plan and install it on that device. See our guide to moving to a new iPhone for more detail.
