Using an eSIM in China
China is unlike anywhere else for staying connected, and it is worth understanding before you go. The country's internet filtering, often called the Great Firewall, blocks Google, Gmail, Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram and many other Western apps at the network level, so they fail on a local Chinese connection no matter which SIM you use.
Whether blocked apps work depends on the plan
This is the key thing to check. A plan uses a Chinese network for signal, but what matters is where its internet traffic is routed. Plans that route internationally send your data out of mainland China before it reaches the internet, so apps like Google and WhatsApp generally keep working without a VPN. Plans that route through the mainland Chinese network sit behind the same filtering as any local connection. Because this varies by plan, check the plan details for how a plan routes if open access to those apps matters to you, and treat it as usually rather than always, since the filtering changes over time.
Set up before you arrive, and keep your home SIM
Install your eSIM before you travel, because eSIM providers' own websites and apps can be unreachable from inside China. A data-only eSIM cannot receive text messages, so keep your home SIM in the phone for the SMS codes that Chinese apps like WeChat Pay and Alipay send.
