Using an eSIM in Morocco

Cities, mountains and the desert

Coverage is strong in Marrakech, Casablanca, Fes, Rabat and Tangier and along the main roads and coast. It thins in the High Atlas mountains and out towards the Sahara, so for a desert tour to Merzouga or Zagora, or a trek in the Atlas, download offline maps and expect long stretches with little or no signal.

How much data

For a week in Morocco using maps, messaging and normal photo sharing, around 5–10GB is a sensible starting point. For two weeks, around 10–20GB gives more room, while frequent video uploads or hotspot use can push that higher.

Will I have signal on a Sahara desert tour?

Around the desert towns and main roads, generally yes, but out in the dunes near Merzouga or Zagora there is often little or no signal. Download offline maps, let someone know your plans, and treat time in the deep desert as offline.

Will it work in the High Atlas mountains?

In the valleys and mountain towns, coverage is variable, and on high passes and trekking routes it can drop out entirely. Download offline maps and any trail notes before you set off on an Atlas trek.

Will it work in the Marrakech and Fes medinas?

Yes, city coverage is strong, which is genuinely useful in the medinas, where maps and translation help you navigate the maze of alleys and find your riad.

Will I have signal in the coastal towns like Essaouira and Agadir?

Yes. The coastal towns and resorts along the Atlantic are well covered, so maps, messaging and photo sharing all work. Signal thins only on the quieter stretches of coast and countryside between them.

How much data will I need for Marrakech and a Sahara trip?

For a week combining Marrakech with the Atlas or Sahara, around 5–10GB is a sensible starting point for maps, messaging and normal photo sharing. For a longer trip, frequent video uploads or hotspot use, consider 10–20GB or more, and keep offline maps for remote stretches where signal can disappear.

Will it work for a road trip between the cities and the desert?

Along the main roads and in the towns, yes. On remote mountain and desert stretches, expect gaps, so download offline maps of your route before driving out to places like Chefchaouen or the dunes.

Can I top-up or extend the plan later?
